The district's preschool program for students with disabilities will look different for the upcoming 2008/2009 school term. To improve services the new plan will divide the program into a morning and afternoon session of 2.5 hours each day Monday through Thursday, with Friday's being set aside for home visits, assessements, Individual Education Plan (IEP) development, and other activities.
This will significantly reduce the class sizes from 15 to 18 students to approximately 6 to 9 students. The younger students (3 year olds) will come for the morning sessions and the older students (4 year olds) will come in the afternoon. This should provide for a safer school environment and reduce the length of the bus rides for the preschool students.
Students with speech/language impairments will come from 1 to 4 days a week depending on their unique needs. This model is similar to other large districts in Alaska.
